Commercial businesses are fuelled by profit. As such, many businesses see electrification as a sound decision for two reasons. Firstly, there is growing consumer demand for eco- friendly goods and services; companies that introduce environmentally friendly working practices will likely see greater revenues in the future. Secondly, going greener will also have significant cost reductions in the long term as companies will have lower fuel and maintenance costs and will likely be taxed less. That said, it should be no surprise that many companies are actively seeking ways of making their business operations more environmentally friendly. In this year’s Fleet Report by Geotab, a global telematics company, it has been found that 78% of organisations are committed to making at least half of their fleet electric and 33% are intending to do so within the next five years.
At Connect 2020 in San Diego, Geotab announced what they are calling a new ‘pillar of innovation’: Sustainability. Firms have been using the company’s telematics system, MyGeotab, for years in order to reduce their carbon footprint but the latest announcement has outlined the following key ways that it can create a greener and more efficient fleet:
• Reduce vehicle idling and fuel use
• Track and decrease CO2 emissions
• Cut down on unnecessary miles driven with smarter routing
• Choose the best fit electric vehicles
• Monitor EV energy usage and charging
Geotab do not only monitor commercial behaviours, the company have also found that 60% of UK domestic consumers expect their next vehicle to be hybrid or electric. Given current data, Geotab expect general electric vehicles sales to rise to 10 million by 2025 and 56 million by 2040.
Interestingly, there also seems to be a regional influence on electric vehicle uptake. Perhaps obviously, London-based residents are more concerned about the impact of climate change than elsewhere in the country at 44%. and 27% of London residents now drive an electric vehicle compared to 5-10% elsewhere in the UK.
The tide is definitely changing but it can often seem like the change is anecdotal. We see these latest statistics as concrete evidence that things are heading in the right direction. As technology improves and both individuals and companies realise the benefits of switching to electric, the adoption of electric technology will accelerate. This is an exciting time for us all, our planet included.
