Even though EV have been around for years now, there are many misconceptions that people have about them. This often stops them from exploring an EV as their next car and means they miss out on what EVs have to offer. Pure electric vehicles now account for 4.7% of new car registrations and this is only going to increase, so lets debunk these 5 myths and show the truth about EVs.
“EVs are all luxury cars”
Arguably the most well known electric car company to the general public is Tesla. Most of the cars in Tesla’s range come with a hefty price tag and so some people assume that this will be the same for all EVs. However, there are more affordable options for an EV. For example, the electric Mini Hatchback comes in at £25,000 and the Renault Zoe starts from £26,495. Looking into the future, it seems that many car companies are going to extend their EV range to include more models for a smaller budget and so options for the average motorists are only going to increase.
“EV don’t have a long enough range for my lifestyle”
This assumption is very common and is very untrue. Electric vehicles can suit any lifestyle, from city driving to long journeys as there is now the infrastructure in Scotland to support this. Most EV have a range of around 200miles and so this is perfect for the average person, especially if you are able to have a charging point at home as you can start every day with a full charge. We have shown in a previous blog post that it is possible to do the North Coast 500 in an electric golf which has a range of 115miles at 80% charge. This is due to the high number of public charge points now available long the route and so long journeys are possible in electric cars, even if they have a smaller mile range.
“Scotland doesn’t have the infrastructure for EVs”
Many people think Scotland isn’t equipped for the boom in EVs on the road, but this is far from the truth. Scotland is leading the way in the UK for the number of charge points per 100,000 population and the Scottish government has been committed to investing in public charge points around the country. This has been shown through ChargePlace Scotland which now has over 1000 publicly available EV charge points.
“Charging would be inconvenient as it takes so long”
It is assumed that charging an EV would take many hours and this can be the case if you have a slow charger, but these have been mostly phased out and replaced with fast or rapid chargers. For most EVs it is possible to add 100miles of range in about 35minutes with a 50KW rapid charger which is available at many charging stations. The map ZapMap shows all of the electric charging points in the UK, if they are being used or free and what type of charger it is – i.e. fast or rapid. This means you can have instant access to everything you need to know make charging your EV convenient for you.
“Electric cars are very dangerous as they drive silently”
It was a worry that EV could be potentially dangerous to pedestrians and cyclists as they are silent. However, various regulations require all manufacturers in the EU to add in an “artificial engine sound” to all models since 2019.
