Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has outlined his vision for the company and EVs in the future. The plan is to combine Tesla and SolarCity, a company that develops and sells solar panels and solar roof tiles. This means that Tesla could sell integrated energy generation and storage while expanding into other vehicles such as trucks and buses. Another venture the CEO hinted at was the development of technology where vehicles could drive themselves.
Tesla is also looking to build an integrated solar roof and battery product, which is the main reason the company bought over SolarCity. This means the future cars could “charge themselves” meaning there would be no need for charging points which the public often see as a drawback to EVs.
Another plan is to expand the range of models that the company sells to include a compact SUV and possibly some more affordable models. The Tesla model 3 was meant to cater for a slightly lower budget and its success will only encourage the company to explore offering cars at a lower price point further.
The solar panels offer huge potential as if we were all driving cars with solar panels on the roof, there is potential for driving to actually become “energy positive” meaning cars could produce more energy than they use. Although, this does seem too good to be true and is very hard to imagine with the current world we live in.
A claim Elon Musk’s has also made is the plans to roll out autonomous taxis in some parts of the US. These are being called “robotaxis” and are said to be one million fully self-driving electric vehicles. While this sounds amazing, again this is hard to imagine as a reality and with the public only slowly coming around to EV, it is hard to estimate how long it will take until a self-driving Tesla with a solar panel as a roof is our taxi driver.
